MISSION STATEMENT

Joseph's House gives witness to the presence of Jesus among us. We do this by sharing our faith, gifts, and talents to serve with compassion those in need.

A. Joseph's House will take a leadership role in the Old North End community.

1. We will build and maintain a friendly, collaborative relationship with other churches and service agencies in the area. We will refer individuals to appropriate organizations and churches.

2. We will initiate and support programs that empower people with daily living skills such as housekeeping, budgeting, parenting, and communication.

3. We will work with other churches and social agencies to assess needs and resources in our community.

B. Joseph's House will live out the gospel message within the context of Catholic Social Teaching by addressing the dignity and rights of people who are socially, politically and economically disadvantaged.

1. We will educate our parish members on current social issues and advocate for public policies that protect and promote human dignity, preserve God's creation and build peace.

2. We will provide opportunities to encourage and foster a spirit of community service among the people of St. Joseph's and in the Old North End.

3. We will provide direct assistance to people.

4. We will continue and expand, as needed, the current activities of Joseph's House which include holiday projects and visitation to people who are sick and/or homebound.

JOSEPH HOUSE PROGRAMS

  • Direct Assistance: Joseph's House is open 2 mornings a week (W,F) from 9am - 12pm to assist those in need. We provide assistance for utilities, rent and deposits, some personal needs and food vouchers. We work with area agencies and organizations to refer and advocate when possible. Aid Counselors: Brian Callanan, Joan Bombard, John Murphy, Sue Gilbert, Lou (Budd) Truso, and Mickey Wetzel.

  • Holiday Baskets: This program provides food for families in need at Thanksgiving and food and holiday assistance for families at Christmas. Application process for both begins in October. Volunteers are needed for collecting items, organizing and distributing the baskets. Program Coordinator: Brian Callanan.

  • Jesse Tree: This project has been a tradition at St. Joseph's for years. Families in need are provided assistance with holiday giving. Based on client and parishioner feedback, we request a balance of both gift cards to select stores, and generic gifts for families to receive. The gift cards that are requested are mostly available through the St. Joseph School SCRIP program, which benefits the school. Volunteers are needed to help with organizing the Family Packets containing gift cards and a gift, as well as for signing up families in October, and distributing in December. Program Coordinator: Brian Callanan.

  • Parish Visitors Program: A ministry to the elderly and homebound by parishioners, which is open to all, involving a weekly, social visit by a volunteer individual(or couple) to an assigned elderly, handicapped or otherwise homebound parishioner. Program Coordinators: Nadia Smith & Marykate Rowan.

  • Meals On Wheels: Meals on Wheels delivers hot, nutritious meals to elderly or homebound people in our community five days per week throughout the year, except on holidays. Volunteers serve on a regular route, in pairs. One person is the driver and the other delivers the meal to the recipient's door or table. The parish supports this effort by providing 14 volunteers who cover seven routes on the second Thursday of each month. This important ministry enables many who are handicapped by age or illness to remain independent and may make it possible for them to continue to live in their own homes.
    Program Coordinator: Leo Yandow

  • Burlington Emergency Shelter Meals: St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, along with other area churches, provides full meals for the residents of the Burlington Emergency Shelter on North Street in Burlington for two consecutive nights, twice per year. Members of the parish contribute food and supplies, prepare the meal and deliver the food to the Shelter.
Program Coordinators: Leo and Norma Yandow

  • Social Justice Listserve (emails from the director releasing "action alerts" on local and national social justice issues)
To sign up, email Josephshouse@adelphia.net and ask to be added to the list
  • Salvation Army Dinners - These dinners are wonderful opportunities for our community members to serve the needy of our area. Volunteer to cook the meal or just to serve! Dates will be advertised and you can sign up individually or as a group! Look in the bulletin for upcoming opportunities! Program Coordinator: Brian Callanan.

  • Food Shelf Sundays - On the first Sunday of every month, the community of St. Joseph's collects canned goods for the Emergency Food Shelf. Drop-off containers are located at the entrance of the church. Please remember to bring your bag to help feed those in need. Program Coordinator: Brian Callanan.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS

  • COTS Walk - The COTS Walk provides a wonderful opportunity to come together with the entire area community to fight homelessness. Proceeds benefit the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), an organization that has provided assistance for the homeless in our area for over 20 years. This 3-mile walk provides a chance to join your friends together, have fun, and raise money for a great cause. This walk takes place in the Spring, and for more infomation visit www.cotsonline.org. Pick up a pledge form or sponsor a walker. You'll be glad you did. Program Coordinator: Brian Callanan.

  • CROP Walk - Join the larger community for this walk sponsored by Church World Service. 25% of the monies raised benefit two essential local organizations - the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and the Joint Urban Ministry Project, while the other 75% assists in worldwide programs of education and empowerment. Pick up a pledge form or offer to sponsor a walker. For more information please visit http://cwscrop.org/newengland/ This takes place in the Autumn, and is a great community event!
